Marcia McNutt is a geophysicist and president of the National Academy of Sciences. From 2013 to 2016, she served as editor-in-chief of the Science journals. Prior to joining Science, she was director of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). McNutt began her academic career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). McNutt has made significant contributions to marine geophysics, particularly in understanding ocean basin development and the structure of the oceanic lithosphere. She has also played key roles in responding to major natural disasters, such as the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Marcia McNutt is a veteran of more than a dozen deep-sea expeditions.
National Academy of Sciences (NAS) was established in 1863 by an Act of Congress, signed by President Lincoln, as a private, nongovernmental institution. The NAS is charged with providing independent, objective advice to United States of America on matters related to science and technology. Members are elected by their peers for outstanding contributions to research. The NAS is committed to furthering science in America, and its members are active contributors to the international scientific community.
