Urban areas are growing rapidly in Finland, Europe, China and especially in Africa, which creates challenges for green spaces, traffic, air quality and urban planning. University of Helsinki has focused on land use mapping and urban sustainability and accessibility research in cooperation with Finnish Environment Institute, National Land Survey and Wuhan University, China. Recent decades have witnessed a profound transformation of the European and global research and higher education system. In this seminar, Johan Östling from the Lund Centre for the History of Knowledge (LUCK) and Marja Jalava from Tampere University will discuss the topic from the perspective of the history of knowledge.
The seminar will take place at The Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters and online on Monday the 29th of January at 17:00 to 19:00.
The Väisälä Prize is worth €15 000 and is awarded annually to young, already distinguished scientists in the field of mathematics and natural sciences. The two prizes were presented at an event hosted by the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters on Monday, 11 December 2023.
The Pro Scientia prize is awarded by the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters to a person or instance noted for speaking out, writing or engaging in other activities to the benefit of scientific study and research, thereby promoting the role of science in society. In 2023, the prize is awarded to MD and professor Juhani Knuuti. The value of the prize is 10 000 euros.
Olli Vapalahti has conducted impactful research of the highest quality on zoonotic diseases, such as nephropathia epidemica, the zika virus disease, the coronavirus disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, and avian influenza.
STS forum holds an annual meeting in Kyoto in early October. This year’s 20th anniversary meeting was attended by nearly 1,500 leaders from over 80 countries, regions, and international organizations. The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters was represented by Kimmo Kaski, President, and Pekka Aula, Secretary General.
