The Academy of Sciences Will Award Nearly 5 Million Euros in Grants and Prizes

The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters will increase the total amount of grants and awards it distributes annually by approximately 2 million euros next year, bringing the total to nearly 5 million euros. This significant increase has been made possible by long-term, profitable asset management.

“Ensuring the continuity of science is one of the Academy of Sciences’ core missions. We are particularly pleased that we are able to increase the number of our grants during these economically challenging times and to make new investments where the need for funding is greatest,” says Pekka Aula, Secretary General of the Academy of Sciences.

The Academy of Sciences has accumulated funds through donations and legacies, which have been placed in an endowment. The returns on these funds are used to support science. In recent years, investments have yielded exceptionally high returns, making it possible to increase the number of grants awarded.

The Academy of Sciences has taken entirely new initiatives. It has opened applications for three-year project grants of 200,000 euros, which support up to four research projects annually, as well as grants aimed at postdoctoral researchers.

The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters has three funds and two foundations that organize open calls for grant applications. Grants are awarded across a broad spectrum of scientific fields and are intended primarily to support young researchers.
