Väisälä Prizes to Professor Anu Kankainen and Professor Lauri Oksanen
The Väisälä Prize is worth €15 000 and is awarded annually to young, already distinguished scientists in the field of mathematics and natural sciences. The two prizes were presented at an event hosted by the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters on Monday, 11 December 2023.
Professor Juhani Knuuti receives the Pro Scientia prize
The Pro Scientia prize is awarded by the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters to a person or instance noted for speaking out, writing or engaging in other activities to the benefit of scientific study and research, thereby promoting the role of science in society. In 2023, the prize is awarded to MD and professor Juhani Knuuti. The value of the prize is 10 000 euros.
Alfred Kordelin prize awarded to Olli Vapalahti, Professor of Zoonotic Virology
Olli Vapalahti has conducted impactful research of the highest quality on zoonotic diseases, such as nephropathia epidemica, the zika virus disease, the coronavirus disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, and avian influenza.
Science and Technology in Society -foorum 2023
STS forum holds an annual meeting in Kyoto in early October. This year’s 20th anniversary meeting was attended by nearly 1,500 leaders from over 80 countries, regions, and international organizations. The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters was represented by Kimmo Kaski, President, and Pekka Aula, Secretary General.
Three years of funding for the teachers’ endorsed Meet a Researcher science education service
The Young Academy Finland has received 110,000 euros from the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation for its Meet a Researcher service, which offers remote visits by researchers to Finnish educational institutions. Almost half of Finnish high schools have already used the service. The financing guarantees the continuation of the service at its current volume until the end of 2026.
Prize for the Humanities 2023 to university researcher Christian Hakulinen
The 2023 Prize for the Humanities, awarded by the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, goes to Christian Hakulinen, who is a university researcher and an associate professor. The prize, worth €15,000, is awarded annually to a researcher in the field of humanities who has already achieved international recognition in the early stages of his or her career.
Researchers: Finland lacks an overall vision on clean hydrogen
Finland aspires to be a pioneer in the production of clean hydrogen. According to the decision principle of the Finnish government, Finland is well placed to produce at least ten per cent of the zero emission hydrogen of the European Union by 2030. Several hydrogen production projects are planned, whereas in some of the projects an investment decision has been taken.
So far, however, Finland has not produced a strategic overall vision on the role of clean hydrogen in the green transition, shows a recent Science Sheet ‘Hydrogen in the Green Transition’ by the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters.

The Year Book of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters has been published.
Office closed in July
The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters is on summer break during July. Our office will be open again from 1.8.2023.
