The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters invites academics and scientists who have distinguished themselves in their own fields to become members. This year, 21 new members were elected.

Alfred Kordelin prize awarded to Olli Vapalahti, Professor of Zoonotic Virology
Olli Vapalahti has conducted impactful research of the highest quality on zoonotic diseases, such as nephropathia epidemica, the zika virus disease, the coronavirus disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, and avian influenza.

New members 2023
The scientists elected to membership of the Academy are distinguished academics. Membership of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, in common with membership of any other academy of science, is looked on as a considerable achievement in a person’s academic career.
This year, 29 new members were elected.

Academic Eva-Mari Aro selected as a Fellow of the Royal Society
Eva-Mari Aro, Professor of Molecular Plant Biology, has been invited to become a Fellow of Royal Society in recognition of her substantial contributions to photosynthesis research.

The scientists elected to membership of the Academy are distinguished academics. Membership of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, in common with membership of any other academy of science, is looked on as a considerable achievement in a person’s academic career.

Professor Terttu Nevalainen receives Gad Rausing Prize 2021
The Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities has awarded the Gad Rausing Prize to member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, Professor Terttu Nevalainen. The prize of 1,3 million Swedish crowns is awarded for outstanding research in humanities.
Pirjo Markkola receives Gad Rausing Prize 2020
The Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities has awarded the Gad Rausing Prize to member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, Professor Pirjo Markkola. The prize of 1,5 million Swedish crowns is awarded for outstanding research in humanities.
