The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters has almost 900 Finnish members and 170 external members who represent the very top in their profession. All members shall be of proven excellence in their own field of academic research. It has been the custom since 1919 for the final vote on the selection of new members to take place at the statutory meeting in April.
The scientists elected to membership of the Academy are distinguished academics. Membership of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, in common with membership of any other academy of science, is looked on as a considerable achievement in a person’s academic career. This year, 29 new members were elected.
