Science Sparrings have resulted in far-reaching visions, ideas, and knowledge that policymakers in ministries have utilised for years after the actual Sparring process.

Science Sparring Masterclass launches today – Expanding the network of knowledge brokers using policy red teaming
The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters is launching a brand-new Science Sparring Masterclass in Helsinki. The goal of the Masterclass is to renew the culture of knowledge brokering and scale the use of the method to new organisation and projects.

Policy red teaming with scientists already across two governmental terms
Science Sparring is policy red teaming developed by knowledge brokers at the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters. Eight out of twelve ministries in Finland have utilised Science Sparring, for example in legislative drafting work.

Stronger structures for science-policy interaction are developed at the EU level – what will happen in Finland?
The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters published a discussion paper in May 2025 on the ecosystem of Finland’s evidence-informed policymaking. To initiate broader societal discussions about the future of science-policy interactions in Finland two discussion events were organised. Strengthening evidence-informed policymaking structures across Europe is also on the European Commission’s agenda.

In early 2025, the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters organised a Science Sparring, focusing on the promotion of physical activity, sports, and elite sports. In this co-creative workshop, researchers and civil servants discussed the underlying factors affecting the topic.
