The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters Adopts Guidelines for the Use of AI

The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters has developed guidelines for the responsible use of artificial intelligence. These guidelines aim to steer the utilization of AI within the Academy.

“Generative AI impacts many workplaces and employees. It is extremely important to agree on a framework for its use so that we can employ AI as efficiently, responsibly, and ethically as possible,” says Pekka Aula, Secretary General of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters.

“At the same time, these guidelines create a shared understanding within the organization on how AI can and should be used,” Aula adds.

The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters has experimented with generative AI in tasks such as drafting texts, illustrating, and making meeting notes. New experiments are continually conducted in the field of science communication. For some employees, utilizing AI has become a regular part of their daily work.

The initiative to create these guidelines came from the employees, which Aula sees as a positive development.

“The process of drafting these guidelines has been very important to us because it has fostered discussion on this topic. Thanks to these discussions, we have become more aware of both the possibilities and risks of using AI. These conversations are encapsulated in the Academy’s guidelines,” says Pekka Aula.

The newly published guidelines are suitable for the current moment, but as AI technology advances, the guidelines will be updated accordingly.

Guidelines for Using AI at the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters

I always use AI responsibly and ethically. In practice, this means the following:

1. I regard AI as a tool that supports and complements my own expertise.

    2. I ensure that the information produced by AI is accurate and relevant, and I do not blindly accept AI-generated responses.

    3. I take responsibility for the decisions I make and ensure that AI’s role remains solely supportive.

    4. I improve and refine the content generated by AI either by myself or in collaboration with others.

    5. I share AI-related experiences and usage methods with colleagues to deepen knowledge within the work community.

    6. I approach AI with curiosity as a learning opportunity and challenge myself to experiment.

    7. I maintain data security and do not input sensitive or confidential information into the AI.
