National Academy of Sciences (NAS) was established in 1863 by an Act of Congress, signed by President Lincoln, as a private, nongovernmental institution. The NAS is charged with providing independent, objective advice to United States of America on matters related to science and technology. Members are elected by their peers for outstanding contributions to research. The NAS is committed to furthering science in America, and its members are active contributors to the international scientific community. The NAS recognizes and promotes outstanding science through election to membership; publication in its journal, PNAS; and its awards, programs, and special activities. Through the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the NAS provides objective, science-based advice on critical issues affecting the nation. Read more
